Nuchal translucency is a measurement of fluid behind the baby’s neck that is present in all babies during the first trimester of pregnancy. Our staff are specially trained and audited through the Fetal Medicine Foundation to undertake this examination using very specific guidelines. Fortunately, these defects are rare. Growth scans allow us track how your baby is growing. Specialised scans can evaluate your risk of having a baby that is small. There are several reasons why you may be referred for a tertiary level scan. You may have had an examination at another centre and the report suggest tertiary referral. Having a sneak preview of baby is a magical moment. This is a specialised procedure and can only be performed in the optimal conditions. If baby is not facing in the right direction or is cuddling their placenta a picture may not be able to be obtained.

Where do I start?

Like many young couples starting out, we were full of hope for the future. Hope that one day we would have a family with two, maybe even three, children. Like many couples we also waited until the time was right to start our family. Sick of all the questions of when we were going to have children and all the over-analysing looks whenever I chose to drink coke instead of wine, we finally decided the time was right.

Continuous electronic FHR monitoring for healthy women during labour, is a routine procedure in many hospitals, yet is associated with an increase in caesarean and instrumental births without improving Apgar score, NICU admission or intrapartum fetal death rates. IA allows women more freedom of movement during labour, enhancing their ability to cope with labour pain and utilize gravity to promote labour progress.

Upright positions and walking have been associated with shorter duration of first stage labour, fewer caesareans and reduced epidural use. The routine use of CTG for intrapartum fetal surveillance has become entrenched in practice without robust randomised controlled trial RCT evidence to support it. The RCTs of continuous CTG which have been undertaken have identified that its use is not associated with statistically significant improvements in long-term neonatal outcomes such as cerebral palsy, but that it is associated with significantly increased rates of unnecessary operative delivery.

CTG is the visual interpretation of continuously generated signals from the fetal heart and is subject to shortcomings in interpretation.
